King-Meiler retreads on TV - 3sat report

The alternative: retreaded tyres from German production

"How car tyres threaten the rainforest" is the title of the TV report from the MAKRO series, which is now available in the 3sat media library. The team led by Berndt Welz takes a look behind the scenes of the tyre industry, sheds light on waste and deception and shows alternatives to the natural product rubber.

Can a plant native to our latitudes replace the traditional sources of rubber at some point and thus stop the growing destruction of flora and fauna in the main cultivation areas Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and India? Research with dandelions is on the way, although the production of car tyres is not expected to start for at least another 10 years. The enormous quantity of over 50 million tonnes of rubber per year means major challenges for alternative raw materials.

The method of tyre retreading is still unbeatable when it comes to saving resources and avoiding waste. The TV report refers to the King-Meiler retread production facility in northern Germany. Here, tyres of certified quality are manufactured according to modern standards.

You can watch the roughly half-hour long video in the 3sat media centre.
