Study Fraunhofer UMSICHT - Environmental performance evaluation retreading

Current study proves the environmental advantage of retreaded tyres

Commissioned by AZuR, Innovationsforum Altreifen-Recycling, this study investigated the environmental savings achieved by retreads compared to new tyres.

Clear conclusion according to Fraunhofer UMSICHT:

  • "For [retreaded] passenger car tyres, there is a CO2 saving compared to new tyres in all scenarios."
  • "In addition to the CO2 balance, retreading has advantages in terms of resource conservation and reduced disposal costs."

Summer tyres of comparable quality were examined for the study

  • King-Meiler STREAX for retreads
  • Michelin Primacy 3 for new tyres

Assuming comparable mileage, our retread achieved a clear advantage in comparison to the new tyre.

Per single tyre, the production of the retread requires less CO2 equivalent* than the production of a new tyre.

Savings

  • 21 kg
  • 63 %

The eco-balance of retreading tyres is even greater than can be seen from the study, which does not yet take into account the advantages such as the saving of resources and the lower burden of disposal.
